South Carolina’s state treasurer says the state can still afford the sales-tax-free weekend. State Treasurer Curtis Loftis says on average, the state’s tax free weekend is about a $3 million giveaway.
“I don’t worry too much about the state because the state has plenty of money. Nobody likes to say that, but we do. We just passed our largest budget ever, but we have some constraints obviously. Everybody wants a Rolls-Royce, but we can only afford a Chevrolet Impala,” says Loftis.
Loftis says in the grand scheme of things–the money taken away in sales taxes really isn’t that big of a deal for the budget.
“I think it’s a fine thing. It’s $3 million from the state and our budget is $22.5 billion, so I don’t think we’re going to miss it,” says Loftis.
The treasurer says he thinks it’s “fine” because it helps out businesses throughout the state.
