A Florence man has been charged with causing an unnecessary Coast Guard search and rescue operation as well as production and possession of child pornography.
Harvey Cox, age 60 of Florence has been charged by US Attorney Bill Nettles with intentionally causing the U.S. Coast Guard to unnecessarily conduct a search and rescue operation. Deputies say Cox left his boat, wallet and truck at a landing in Murrell’s Inlet in January. The U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources and Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office looked for Cox for days.
Cox is facing federal charges after being accused of faking his own death to avoid a charge of criminal sexual conduct with a minor. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office charged Cox with three counts of committing a lewd act upon a minor, plus lesser charges.
He was arrested in Florida in March. If convicted, Cox faces a mandatory 25 years in prison and maximum 50 years, and a fine of $250,000.
