Unemployed workers in South Carolina can now request their weekly jobless benefits online. The state Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) announced Wednesday the debut of its new web portal called “Mybenefits.” The website allows people to request payments, check the status of their claim, and even seek jobs.
Agency spokeswoman Adrienne Fairwell said it makes it easier for unemployed South Carolinians. “This portal is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” she said, pointing out that jobless workers currently have to call in or physically visit DEW offices weekly to make their requests. They also receive feedback on the web that they currently do not get from the automated phone service.
DEW has been working on the website for the past few months. It also links to the agency’s existing “Virtual One-Stop” online system that was created last year and helps unemployed South Carolinians search and apply for jobs.
There are currently about 100,000 South Carolinians receiving jobless benefits from DEW. Fairwell said most will be notified of the new online portal when they request their benefits in the coming weeks.
