The city of Charleston, the South Carolina State Ports Authority and Carnival Cruise Lines filed a joint petition Monday asking the State Supreme Court to dismiss the case against the Charleston cruises. Several environmental groups and Charleston residents filed a lawsuit earlier this year that claimed the Carnival cruises in Charleston violated city ordinances and polluted the environment and historical assets.
This week, the city, the SPA and Carnival asked a judge to rule on and dismiss this suit. The latest filing states the lawsuit is just an attack on South Carolina’s maritime commerce. It also claims other ships and businesses could be affected–like BMW who brings in vehicles and power generating equipment. The Ports Authority says the suit takes away “the ability to recruit, promote and encourage maritime commerce” in South Carolina.
