The Folly Beach County Park is closed for the remainder of 2011. Last week, Folly Beach officials had to close the county park after erosion caused by Hurricane Irene. Now, they have decided to close the park for the rest of the year and will evaluate progress before reopening in 2012.
Folly Beach is a barrier island close to downtown Charleston and a popular sunbathing and surfing spot.
Dan Burger, of the state’s Ocean & Coastal Resource Management team told Charleston’s WCIV-TV, “The big story is the loss of beach on Folly Beach, in the eastern portion of the island and also the county park,” said .
The Charleston Post and Courier reports the island’s beaches, swimming areas and businesses remain open for business throughout the Labor Day weekend.
