In an interview last week with South Carolina Radio Network, Sen. Jim Demint said he would likely pick his favorite close to the SC GOP Primary.
After grilling most of the top GOP presidential contenders Monday night, DeMint remained non-committal
“To me, I have not settled on one who is best. In fact, I have a little different perspective after today than I did before and I know some of them fairly well,” Demint said.
He told media after the event that he’d like to hear more: “I don’t know if it brought me closer to a decision on one candidate. It reminded me of a lot of the questions that I want to continue to ask the candidates, ” DeMint continued. “We didn’t hear enough from the candidates on the different roles of the federal government and the states.”
He’d also like to hear from Gov. Rick Perry, who returned to Texas to deal with massive wildfires.
“I haven’t met the governor at this point, a lot of people in South Carolina have not seen him in person, so we’ll just have to deal with that in another forum, either here or in another state,” DeMint said.
DeMint’s endorsement could be pivotal in the state’s primary, touted as the first-in-the-South and so far, one that has consistently chosen the party candidate.
