The National Weather Service has confirmed a small tornado struck Newberry County Monday afternoon as the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee hit South Carolina.
Officials say the tornado hit around 5:15 pm seven miles northeast of Newberry, in the southeastern section of Sumter National Forest. Other than a few downed trees, the damage was minimal.
NWS classified the tornado as an EF-O– the lowest level on the Fujita Scale.
Several witnesses reported a funnel cloud in the area.
