An Upstate legislator says he is facing tax evasion charges.
In a statement released by his office Wednesday, Rep. Harold Mitchell (D-Spartanburg) said he would report to an arraignment Thursday at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility.
“I have openly shared information when it was favorable and I believe the same openness should apply when it’s not,” Mitchell said in a statement released Wednesday evening, “I have learned that warrants for my arrest were sought and received by the South Carolina Department of Revenue on charges of tax evasion.”
He said he was uncertain of the specifics, saying he had not seen the warrants.
Mitchell has represented District 31 in Spartanburg since 2005. He is the Executive Director of Regenesis, an environmental justice organization.
