A woman authorities say caused a 7-car accident at a popular interstate merge in the Lowcountry is now behind bars for fleeing the scene–on foot. The woman, said to be wearing red spandex pants and later identified as 36-year-old Pamela Habersham of Beaufort, was arrested shortly after she was involved in the I-26 and I-526 accident. The interstate was closed down for nearly two hours.
Witnesses on the scene told police they saw a woman get out of her vehicle right after the accident occurred and she ran off on foot. Police tracked her down and arrested her, later reporting the car she was driving was stolen. Reports say Habersham was arrested for two outstanding traffic violations.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, while Port Royal police are investigating the car-jacking. Habersham was transported to the Charleston County Detention Center.
