As the unemployment numbers continue to rise in South Carolina, Otis Elevator Company has announced it will open a new facility in Florence County–creating about 360 new jobs. The facility will produce new elevators, known as the Gen2 elevator, that have green technology with LED lighting, hydraulic fluid and also require less space. The 423,000 foot facility will have a 150-foot test tower.
Governor Nikki Haley says the Otis Elevator’s decision to expand in South Carolina is a big win for not just Florence County, but the state as a whole.
Last month, Otis Elevator made a fee-in-lieu-of payment with Florence County with “Project Rosebud”–an economic development project that reduces the company’s property taxes for the next 30 years. This agreement requires Otis to create at least 360 jobs with employees making an average of $25 per hour. This would create about a $40 million investment to the property.
