Bridgestone Americas, a subsidiary of tire producer Bridgestone Corporation, will be adding a new 1.5 million-square-foot off-road radial tire manufacturing facility in Aiken County. It will also add capacity to its existing passenger and light truck tire plant there.
The existing tire plant expansion includes new, more advanced tire building machines to meet growing demand, including ultra-high performance and light truck/SUV tires.
When the plants are completed, the company says that’s a total $1.2 billion investment in new projects and will increase the company’s workforce in Aiken County by more than 850 full-time and contractor positions.
The South Carolina Department of Commerce provided $15.5 million in grants to the company for infrastructure and site preparation, including about $6 million to improve public roads adjacent to the facility.
According to Gov. Nikki Haley, “Today’s announcement represents the largest initial capital investment by a company in our state’s history. Haley joined company officials for today’s expansion announcement in Graniteville.
Commerce officials say this investment will boost a lagging manufacturing sector in the state.
