A Charleston landlord discriminated against families with children, according to the recent lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department. John W. Altman was charged with violating the federal Fair Housing Act which states that a landlord cannot discriminate against families with children.
Altman is accused of publishing ads and statements to testers that discourage families with children from living in his apartment complex. He was caught through the Fair Housing Testing Program that has secret shoppers pose like they are interested in renting, gathering information on possible discriminatory practices. The complaint is an allegation of unlawful conduct.
The case will go to federal court, where the allegations must be proven.
