Today, the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia will hold a ground breaking for a $3 million, 10,000- foot new facility to serve the nation’s newest wave of veterans.
Priscilla Creamer, spokesperson for the Dorn Medical Center, says the new space will help treat 9,900 returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq, while the current hospital will serve older veterans.
The facility that will be called the New Freedom Wellness Center. Creamer says it will give veterans “one-stop” access to primary and mental health care along with access to a pharmacy.
The center is scheduled to be finished in 18 months.
The Dorn VA facilities serve most of the state, except for the Charleston area.
