Repairs that required a lane closure along Interstate 95 near Santee were finished 19 days ahead of schedule.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced the repairs on the northbound bridge over Lake Marion on the Clarendon-Orangeburg County line were completed on October 22.
Officials were eager to see the repairs completed as soon as possible as the construction required narrowing the heavily-travelled bridge to just one lane, causing major traffic jams.
With the completion of the work, both lanes are now open again. The southbound bridge was never affected.
Also Thursday, SCDOT officials announced the SC 150 bridge over Interstate 85 near Gaffney was had been replaced a month ahead of schedule. After a tractor-trailer crash in the early morning hours of May 23 damaged the bridge’s support columns, Transportation Secretary Robert St. Onge issued an emergency order to remove damaged portions of the bridge for a speedy reopening of I-85 northbound.
