The man accused of posing as a social worker and taking advantage of vulnerable adults now faces a felony charge. Columbia Police Officers arrested Mitchell Smith Monday on the additional charge of neglect of a vulnerable adult, which alleges that he did not provide adequate medical care to a vulnerable adult with a leg injury which needed medical attention.
Smith is also accused of possessing a small amount of marijuana.
Earlier in October, Smith was charged with unauthorized practice as a social worker for housing seven vulnerable adults including military veterans at three locations in Columbia. He did not have the legal credentials to care for the adults.
He allegedly claimed to be a social worker and received money from the individuals. The Department of Social Services (DSS) has placed the vulnerable adults into emergency protective custody.
Columbia’s Police Chief Randy Scott says this investigation continues.
