New Charleston billboards are promoting the cruise industry in the city–saying it’s good for jobs. Last year, a group who opposed the cruises in Charleston–claiming they polluted the environment and the city–placed billboards along Charleston’s Interstate-26 that read “Save Charleston. Support Cruise Control.” Causing quite a debate among cruise supporters, another group has answered.
A group called “Cruise On In Charleston” has placed new billboards on I-26 that read “Cruise On In…Welcome and Thank You.” The Associated Press reports the group claims the cruise industry contributes about $37 million to the local economy per year and needs to stay. Carnival Cruise Lines is still porting in Charleston–despite the recent debate from preservationists and neighborhood groups.
