While investigating another crime, Lee County authorities say they uncovered a dogfighting outfit, along with several canines used in the gaming operation.
A dozen bloodied pit bulls were discovered after Lee County sheriffs deputies found the outfit Sunday. Investigators say the dogs were kept behind a mobile home on Browntown Road near Interstate 20.
Deputies were looking for stolen farm equipment Sunday when they stumbled onto the outfit. They said they received a call about a truck parked behind a farmer’s shed, and Sheriff Daniel Simon happened to see the suspects on his way to church, recognizing their truck’s description from the call. Investigators also found dogfighting training equipment, such as a treadmill used to keep the dogs in shape.
Five men are charged in the case. The dogs are in safe-keeping until a judge decides what to do with them.
