Governor Nikki Haley will speak to leaders in the maritime industry on the coast of Charleston later this evening. Haley will address the Propeller Club of Charleston–a 330-member group representing all of the state’s maritime shipping interests. She was praised by Georgia officials last week for her support and help in a compromise that removed South Carolina’s opposition to the Savannah port deepening project.
The Port of Savannah is in direct competition with the Port of Charleston–so some South Carolina lawmakers and maritime leaders did not agree with Haley’s help in removing the objections. Both ports want funding for a deepening project so they could bring in larger cargo ships–which would in turn generate more business for their state’s economy.
Some, like Berkeley Senator Larry Grooms, say the deepening permit approvals should be based on science, not compromise. Haley is expected to address some of these concerns tonight. Charleston has the third-largest Propeller Club in the world.
