A fiberglass insulation manufacturer in Winnsboro is shutting down.
In a short announcement last week, Guardian Building Products said the company has closed its Fairfield County plant, effectively immediately. Guardian has been hit especially hard by the housing crash of the late 2000s, as a lack of new construction has meant a lack of demand for its products.
The closure means 84 employees will lose their jobs immediately, although they will continue to receive full pay and benefits for the next 2 months.
Guardian first opened the Winnsboro plant in 2007, taking over what had been a shuttered Mack Truck facility. At the time, the company said it would invest $39 million in the site.
Guardian Building Products is a subsidiary Guardian Industries Corporation. A spokeswoman said the company would have no further comment beyond its press release.
