Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s support in the GOP presidential race surges in the Palmetto state. The latest NBC News-Marist Poll shows Gingrich with 42 percent of the vote. That’s a 35-point jump since October’s NBC-Marist poll of the Palmetto State contest.Mitt Romney has dropped five points to 23 percent. Ron Paul sits at nine percent. Tick perry and Michelle Bachmann are tied at seven percent. The poll also indicates that in a filed reduced to three candidates in South carolina, Gingrich gets the support of 48 percent of likely primary voters, Romney gets 30 percent, and Paul receives 12 percent. Narrowed to a two-way race, Gingrich’s support increases to 57 percent and Romney moves to 33 percent.
