A former Allendale municipal clerk of court was arrested Tuesday and is facing embezzlement charges, according to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
Investigators accuse Nicole Washington of misconduct in office and embezzlement of public funds, SLED officials said Wednesday.
SLED agents say Washington admitted taking money paid to the Allendale municipal court for traffic fines and court fees for her own personal use. A town audit found that more than $8,800 in the court’s finances were unaccounted for between July and September 2011.
She was booked at the Allendale County Detention Center. The Allendale Police Department worked with SLED in the investigation.
