Some Tea Party (capital “T”) are incensed with candidate and Congressional Tea Party Caucus leader Michele Bachman’s campaign accusing Gingrich of paying off Tea Party supporters, prompting this letter sent to media.
For a couple weeks now, Michele Bachmann’s campaign in South Carolina has been attacking the tea party movement by accusing tea party supporters of Newt Gingrich of being bought off.
Now that Michele Bachmann herself has decided to throw fuel on the fire, and this issue has become national news, we as leaders within the South Carolina tea party movement feel we must speak out to defend our integrity.
The South Carolina tea parties have a well-developed network and history of working together on statewide campaigns and legislative issues, and we are disappointed and angry that the Bachmann campaign is using this negative strategy in an attempt to divide us.
Speaker Gingrich has often said that he has one opponent – Barack Obama. He is right, because we must be unified as a team if we are to defeat President Obama and restore Constitutional government from the ground up.
When the Presidential campaigns leave our state on January 22, we will continue to work together to make South Carolina the freest state in the nation. There is support for many presidential campaigns among our organizations, but contrary to the inaccuracies being spread by the Bachmann campaign, there is no Bachmann/Gingrich war amongst our members.
Some of us may disagree on our choices, but those disagreements will not divide us, despite the attempts by Michele Bachmann and her campaign.
There are many Tea Party leaders who have decided to support Gingrich as a candidate. While 3 of them went on to join his staff, the vast majority of them are volunteers. We encourage our members and leaders to get involved at every level with campaigns, even staff positions. What better way to have an impact on those candidates!
The undersigned repudiate the negative tactics of Michele Bachmann’s campaign, and ask that she repudiate this continued questioning of the integrity of the movement she claims to represent.

Statement by Bachmann SC Tea Party Coalition Leaders
Tea Party leaders that support Newt Gingrich, and a few others, published a critical piece about Michele Bachmann and her SC Campaign earlier today. The irony of this is that these same people have been publicly accusing the Bachmann campaign of negative attacks because we have been holding Newt Gingrich accountable for his record and for revealing his personal gains from promoting progressive philosophies. Last time we checked, this is what the Tea Party does. We hold candidates accountable for their record. This is exactly what Michele Bachmann and her Tea Party supporters in South Carolina have been doing and will continue to do. It wouldn’t matter if it was Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney. If supporters claim to be Tea Party and endorse establishment candidates, we will question their commitment to principle and philosophy.
While the critical memo suggests a perspective of the entire South Carolina Tea Party movement, we have to note that the signers of the memo are not the entire movement. 56 other Tea Party leaders are supporting Michele Bachmann and her leadership in the effort to hold Newt Gingrich accountable.
No one can argue with the facts. Newt Gingrich held a fundraiser for the Myrtle Beach Tea Party. Newt Gingrich hired the Myrtle Beach Tea Party “leader” as a fulltime staffer. Newt Gingrich then gained the Myrtle Beach Tea Party endorsement, despite being the antithesis of everything the Tea Party stands for. The letter from SC Tea Party activists blasts the Bachmann campaign for pointing out these facts and is signed by two paid Gingrich staffers. The fact that one third (1/3) of Gingrich supporters who signed the letter, are paid staff, would seem to indicate that Gingrich is getting exactly what he is paying for.
We are not insulting the integrity of our Tea Party peers, but we are demanding full transparency from those being paid by Newt Gingrich while also leading South Carolina Tea Party organizations.
The bottom line is: Newt Gingrich doesn’t hold tea party values. He supported TARP, took 1.6 million from Freddie and Fannie and supported the individual health care mandate; one of the core issues for the Tea Party. Newt Gingrich is a Washington-insider who has a history of pay to play politics. It’s time for Tea Party patriots from around South Carolina to let Newt Gingrich know that his Washington tactics will not work in our state.
