An organic food company that planned to hire 700 people in Greenville County now says it will not open the plant as scheduled.
Amy’s Kitchen originally announced in May that it would open a new production facility at an old Sara Lee plant in Greenville County, saying the move would create 700 jobs in five years. That announcement was greeted to much fanfare by state officials, including Governor Nikki Haley. Production was supposed to start in January.
However, the company said Monday that it ran into problems renovating the old plant and could not move in fast enough to fulfill its increased demand. As a result, the California-based food company says it will expand in its existing facilities on the West Coast instead.
Amy’s Kitchen officials did not say if they still have plans for the Greenville site in the future. They said they hope to figure that out in a few months.
