Officials have not named the suspect in Tuesday’s fatal shooting of an Aiken public safety officer. They do say the suspect is currently in a Georgia hospital.
However, local media say sources have told them the man’s name.
Aiken law enforcement officials still haven’t released much about what happened. All Public Safety Department personnel have said publicly is that officers Scotty Richardson and Travis Griffin made a traffic stop Tuesday when the suspect fired at them.
The 33-year-old Richardson was fatally wounded and later died at an Augusta hospital. Griffin was also shot in the chest, but officials say he was spared serious injury by his bullet-proof vest. Police say the suspect was also shot in the fight, but otherwise have not said anything about his condition.
Local media in the area are identifying the suspect as 19-year-old Stephon Carter. The Aiken Standard reports Carter was at the scene of the shooting Tuesday night and is now at the Medical College of Georgia hospital with officers guarding his room. Carter was arrested this summer for carrying an illegal firearm.
A funeral for Richardson will be next Tuesday, December 27 at the USC-Aiken Convocation Center.
