Officials with the State Law Enforcement Division says a 19 year old Aiken man, when he is released from an Augusta area hospital, will be arrested and charged with the fatal shooting of Aiken police officer Scotty Richardson. SLED has obtained arrest warrants for 19 year old Stephon Carter who is currently recuperating from wounds at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Carter is accused of killing the 33 year old officer in a shootout Tuesday night after a traffic stop at an apartment complex in Aiken.
Carter is also accused of shooting a second police officer, 28 year old Travis Griffin. Griffin was treated and released after his bullet proof vest prevented serious injury. Once Carter is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Richmond County (GA) Detention Center and await extradition back to South Carolina.
