Rick Perry has lost the support of an important South Carolina lawmaker— who has now defected to a rival campaign.
State Sen. Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley) has withdrawn his support for the Texas governor and has endorsed Rick Santorum. In a statement Monday, Grooms urged Perry to drop out of the race.
“With only days to go before the South Carolina Primary, it is apparent that Governor Perry cannot win and has no viable strategy in moving forward,” Grooms said, “Remaining in the race at this point only serves to steer votes away from viable candidates.”
Recent polls have shown Perry is in single digits for support with likely South Carolina voters. RealClear Politics reports he is averaging about 6 percent in polls. The presidential primary is Saturday.
