Deepen Charleston Harbor and do it quickly.
That was the general sentiment in the dozens of comments the Army Corps of Engineers received about its $20 million study of the deepening of the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.
Charleston District Corps spokeswoman Glenn Jefferies says that of the 80 comments received, the clear majority favors the deepening project and wants it done as soon as possible.
The study is necessary before the $300 million project can begin.
Port officials say the deepening of Charleston harbor is essential so the port can handle the larger ships that will come up the east coast when the Panama Canal expansion is completed in 2014.
