Longtime Marion County legislator Jim Battle will not run for reelection this year, according to the Marion Star newspaper. Battle has served in the South Carolina House of Representatives as a Democrat since 1997.
The 69-year-old Battle told the newspaper that 16 years is long enough. He said he hopes to spend more time with his family and has no further plans to run for elected office.
Battle has spent the past decade on the House Ways & Means committee and has often been the top House Democrat involved in budget negotiations.
He purposely kept a low profile in the chamber, but was considered an ally of education interests. According to his official biography, he was also honored twice as a “Guardian of Small Business” by the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
