South Carolina Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell has agreed to assume the job of Lt. Governor now that Ken Ard has resigned the post.
McConnell released a statement saying “After much thought prayer and discussion, I have decided that I have a moral obligation to my oath of office.” Read entire McConnell letter.
This decision surprised Statehouse insiders McConnell in the past had seemed resistent to giving up his Charleston district and powerful role as president pro tem.
He is planning to be sworn in when the Senate meets on Tuesday.
Pickens Sen. Larry Martin will now be chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Jake Knotts will chair the Senate Rules Committee.
