Officials broke ground Thursday on a $313 million pharmaceutical plant to be built in Lexington County.
Orlando-based Nephron Pharmaceuticals announced plans to build the plant a 60-acre site near the new Amazon facility in October.
The move is expected to create 700 jobs.
Nephron CEO Lou Kennedy says the new facility will help the company develop products and expand its market share.
The company already operates facilities in Florida, Kentucky and Arizona.
Gov. Nikki Haley and University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides were scheduled to take part in the ground breaking ceremony.
Kennedy and her husband have pledged $30 million to the pharmacy program at USC.
It’s the second largest gift in the school history.
