A Sumter County toddler is recovering in the hospital after his uncle says the boy was shot while the two were fleeing bullets Sunday afternoon. However, investigators are questioning the uncle’s story.
Authorities say the shooting happened around 4 p.m. near Lakewood. The uncle told investigators that he and three-year-old Tyreese Smith, who was not in a car seat, were driving when someone in a vehicle following them began firing at their car.
The uncle told investigators he pulled over, grabbed the boy, and started running away. It was then that the uncle said Smith toddler was hit by a bullet. The uncle believes the car that was following him was an older black Pontiac Grand Am.
Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies say they are still trying to figure out how the boy was shot. They say the uncle’s story is not consistent with their evidence. Smith is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left side of his rib cage.
