A black bear has been captured and released after wandering near downtown Camden.
Officers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources were able to tranquillize the 250 pound bear at about 1 a.m. Monday after a dog chased him up a tree.
DNR spokesman Brett Witt says law enforcement had to move quickly because they had to transport the bear in a truck without a cage — a window of about 30 minutes.
SCDNR released the bear unhurt in Kershaw County near the Wateree River.
“It is somewhat unusual to see them in more populated areas,” Witt says, “but bears have been sighted in 45 of 46 counties in South Carolina, so they do wander. The primary areas they are seen is the Lowcountry and the Upstate.”
Whitt says black bears are mainly searching for food and a loud noise will usually scare them away.
