The mayor of the Town of Norway has been indicted by an Orangeburg County Grand Jury and is now suspended from public office.
According to an executive order from Governor Nikki Haley’s office, Jim Preacher has been indicted on charges of nepotism and misconduct in office. The indictment accuses Preacher of giving himself a pay raise without approval from town council and he hired his son to a position at the town’s water treatment department.
Preacher was arrested by the State Law Enforcement Division earlier this year on charges that the mayor impersonated a police officer when he pulled over a Highway Patrol trooper that had pulled Preacher himself over minutes earlier. Preacher claims he was serving in his duties as village constable when he stopped the trooper.
According to the executive order, Preacher will be suspended until he is either acquitted or convicted of the charges against him.
