A man was killed and 19 people injured when a bus collided with a pickup on Pawleys Island. Authorities say the accident on U.S. 17 Tuesday evening involved a Williamsburg County Transit Bus that was carrying over 30 people.
Highway troopers say the pickup’s driver, 47-year-old Gregory Smith of Pawleys Island, died shortly after the crash. A witness said that Smith was pulling out of a parking lot at the Club Isis nightclub when the bus hit his truck around 6:50 p.m.
Midway Fire Department spokesman Bob Beebe said it took firefighters nearly 15 minutes to cut Smith out of his truck.
“The bus basically t-boned the pickup truck right into the driver’s door,” Beebe said. “It had about a foot of intrusion into the driver’s compartment… he was actually pinned into his seat with the steering wheel pinned down onto his legs.”
The bus driver was identified by the South Carolina Highway Patrol as Joshua McCrea of Kingstree.
Twelve of the injured people on the bus were taken to area hospitals. One is reported to be in critical condition. The rest were treated at the scene.
