A homeless man was charged with making a bomb threat Saturday at a pharmacy in Columbia’s Five Points district.
58-year-old Greg Hiers was arrested Saturday and charged with both armed robbery and communicating a threat with a weapon of mass destruction. Columbia Police say that Hiers entered a Rite Aid drug store around 11 am Saturday, walked up to the counter, and told an employee that he had a bomb. He then told employees and customers to leave the building.
After a more than three-hour standoff, a Columbia Police SWAT team entered the business and deemed it safe. The police report said Hiers was found unconscious in the pharmacy area of the store. No one was injured and no explosive devices were found.
Hiers was taken to an area hospital for examination. He has a previous criminal record that includes drug charges. His last known address was a local homeless shelter.
