A reserve officer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is facing hit-and-run charges following a fatal collision Friday night.
46 year-old Jeffery Thomas of Mount Pleasant is charged with leaving the scene of an accident that killed a bicyclist on James Island Friday night. He is free on a $20,000 bail.
The victim was identified as 40-year-old Matthew Denton. He owned a fiber optic cable company and had developed several other businesses. He died at the scene.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says it responded to a call around 10:30 Friday night that an SUV had hit Denton. An incident report said Thomas stopped briefly and got out of his truck to check on the victim. He then left the scene but returned about a half-hour later.
Thomas is an unpaid volunteer with DNR. Because of the pending charges against him… he is no longer with the agency.
