Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford made international news again after proposing to the woman who was once his mistress.
Argentine newspaper Clarin first reported that Sanford proposed to Maria Belen Chapur last week. When he publicly–and emotionally–revealed his relationship in a 2009 press conference at the South Carolina Statehouse, he described Chapur as his “soul mate.”
That year, the affair, and his highly publicized disappearance to Argentina to visit Chapur, resulted in his divorce from first-lady Jenny Sanford. She wrote a memoir about their relationship and he slipped out of the political spotlight, except for occasional appearances as a Fox News commentator.
According to various media sources, Sanford proposed in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, after hiding out in a restroom stall to surprise Chapur.
The paper reports that she publicly–and emotionally—agreed.
