State Democratic Party Chair Dick Harpootlian has agreed to foot a convention night viewing party in South Carolina– along with apologizing to the party after he “jammed my foot in my mouth” after using a Nazi metaphor about Gov. Nikki Haley.
The Columbia attorney has opened the downtown Columbia Convention Center beginning at 7:30 for people who had the community passes to get into Bank of America stadium. The event was moved to back to the Time Warner Arena because of the threat of thunderstorms.
Busloads of Democrats from neighboring South Carolina were scheduled to attend after having to stand in line in the past few weeks to get credentials.
Harpootlian today has also made the rounds of interviews to remedy his Haley statement that he now says “distracts from the discussion.”
He said when Haley took the lead in daily news briefings in a highly secured basement studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame: “She was down in the bunker a la Eva Braun.”
Today he said: “Hyperbole is something I regret. You know what I really regret is making a comment like that distracts from the discussion of Romney’s economic plan versus President Obama’s plan. And the real issue of this campaign, that’s the only regret I have, and out of this national focus I may cross the line again but not about Nazis. I didn’t want to imply that she’s a Nazi. What I wanted to imply is that she lives in a very insular world where people cannot criticize her and people cannot ask her questions about transparency. And she told a reporter last week ‘I’m not answering your questions.”
The governor responded, ““Dick Harpootlian is an angry, hateful man that continues to embarrass South Carolina every time he opens his mouth.”
Harpootlian’s comments were among a few this week linking the GOP to the Nazi movement.
