The city of North Charleston is bucking the trend when it comes to smoking bans.
Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and other localities in the Lowcountry have passed smoking bans for their businesses, saying such laws are needed to protect the public’s health and welfare. However, the North Charleston City Council reversed that trend Wednesday, voting 6-5 not to require a smoking ban in the city’s workplaces.
North Charleston City councilmember Bobby Jameson argued that businesses should have the right to make such decisions on their own without government getting in the way.
Wednesday’s vote follows a move by Charleston County officials earlier this month to ban smoking in unincorporated areas of the county.
The city council also voted 7-4 in favor of a resolution that would urge area employers to establish smoke-free workplaces.
