Law enforcement officials say a 12-year-old North Carolina girl who was the focus of an Amber Alert in four states, including South Carolina, was found safe in Hallandale Beach, Florida around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Broward County deputies arrested a registered sex offender who they say took 12-year-old Abigale Lefevers from her Newport, North Carolina home on Monday.
38-year-old Timothy Newman was with Lefevers at the time. Newman, a registered sex offender, is an acquaintance of Lefevers’s father, Carteret County Sheriff’s deputies say. He was released from prison last year after being convicted of sex crimes against children in 2004.
Investigators originally said they believed Lefevers was in the Myrtle Beach area, but later canceled an Amber Alert in the Carolinas and instead switched their attention to Georgia and Florida.
The pair were reported to be in a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring with a North Carolina license tag AKT-6534.
The girl’s father, Robert Lefevers, told WITN News in Greenville that investigators were able to track the pair because someone tried to use his stolen debit card at a Florida gas station. The card was used on Monday in Jacksonville, N.C., to withdraw $100.
