A Sumter County man is accused of gunning down a tow truck driver who was repossessing his car. Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies say they arrested 81-year-old Alton Shelley Tuesday and charged him with murder.
Deputies said they got a call Tuesday afternoon about a shooting on Fletcher Drive in the East Sumter community. When they arrived, they found black “wrecker” truck in the middle of the road. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old Todd Showell, was dead.
Investigators said Showell and another man had come to the home to repossess Shelly’s vehicle. However, Shelley claimed they had the wrong car. At some point, deputies say Shelley opened fire with his gun. One of the shots struck Showell, killing him.
The other man was not injured.
