The former human resources director for the City of Hanahan has been arrested and charged with embezzling $10,000 or more of public funds.
A release from the State Law Enforcement Division says 48-year-old Kimberly Murdaugh was arrested Thursday. She is accused of embezzling nearly $25,000 from the City of Hanahan between December 2005 and March 2010.
According to Hanahan city officials, Murdaugh was placed on administrative leave on August 3 pending the results of the criminal investigation. She resigned from her director position on August 8.
An affidavit released by SLED says Murdaugh deprived the city of her personal contributions towards her health plan, but continued to receive medical and dental benefits for herself and her family. Due to her position, Murdaugh was responsible for ensuring that employees’ insurance premiums were paid each month. However, the affidavit claims she never paid her own full, out-of-pocket premiums.
Murdaugh is now being held at the Berkeley County Detention Center. Authorities say the investigation is still underway. If Murdaugh is found guilty, she could face fines and a 10-year prison sentence.
