A Gaffney man has been charged with murder after police say he confessed to strangling and beating his 78-year-old mother to death and putting her body in a trash can outside of her home .
44-year-old Brandon Knuckles admitted that he caused the death of 78-year-old Marjorie Knuckles after a heated argument, according to a Gaffney Police Department statement. Police say Brandon Knuckles lived with his mother.
Knuckles faces several other charges, including possession of stolen property, financial transaction card theft, and financial transaction card fraud. Those charges came after police said Knuckles took his mother’s Nissan Altima once he killed her. He remains jailed at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office said Marjorie Knuckles was probably dead for a few days before a family friend found her body in a trash container in her backyard on Sunday morning. She had been reported missing by her family on Saturday night.
Coroner Dennis Fowler said that a Monday autopsy found Knuckles had been strangled to death. He said it was one of the most “heinous” crimes he’s seen. “In addition to being strangled, Mrs. Knuckles sustained other non-lethal bodily injuries caused by beating,” Fowler said in a written statement. “The person responsible for this has no (conscience).”
Gaffney Police said they learned that Brandon Knuckles was at a local motel on Monday morning. Officers found him at the Homestead Lodge in Gaffney, and the Nissan was in a nearby parking lot.
