A man who was involved in a minor wreck Sunday in Greenville County and flagged down help before running away was found dead of hypothermia Monday morning.
Authorities say the body of 34-year-old Stuart McDowell, of Greenville; was found in a driveway about a quarter mile away with no signs of trauma and no indication of disease. He had a core body temperature of 50 degrees and died of hypothermia, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. Investigators say McDowell had been in the woods and a creek and some of his clothing was found in the water. Hypothermia victims are known to sometimes feel hot, causing them to remove clothing.
Authorities said McDowell was not wanted for any crimes, had no outstanding warrants and was not driving under suspension, so at this time there is no explanation for why he ran.
Authorities said they weren’t sure how the accident happened. The Coroner’s Office said McDowell’s vehicle had moderate damage after it ran into a “guide wire.”
Officials say they do not know why McDowell left the scene.
