A Richland County prison guard has been arrested and accused of assaulting an inmate.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department investigators say 37-year-old Robin Smith is accused of stomping on an inmate at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on February 21. The inmate, who was not identified, had been booked on a trespassing charge earlier this month. He was charged with aggravated assault and battery.
In a statement Monday, Sheriff Leon Lott said Smith assaulted the inmate after he “refused to comply with” the guards’ instructions. Deputies accuse Smith of repeatedly kicking the inmate’s head and side, then putting a boot on the inmate’s head and neck while pulling his arm in the opposite direction.
Lott said his office first learned about the incident after Palmetto Health Richland hospital notified them that the inmate was in critical condition.
A county spokeswoman said Smith was fired Monday. He had worked at the jail for two years.
