Police say a Sumter woman was shot and killed while trying to break up a fight in front of her home.
In a statement released Thursday, Deputy Chief Alvin Holston says officers found 54-year-old Patricia Singleton lying in her front yard on Council Street Wednesday night. Holston says Singleton had been shot in the chest and later died at a hospital. Detectives say they now think Singleton was trying to break up a fight between two groups on her lawn when she was shot. Detectives cited evidence they found on the scene.
Police said they arrested 18-year-old Derek Darby just after midnight on Thursday and charged him with murder. Police records show Singleton and Darby were neighbors.
Darby was jailed awaiting a bond hearing.
