A Charleston-area musician is behind bars on charges of criminal sexual conduct.
Mt. Pleasant Police say 60-year-old singer-songwriter John Brannen was arrested by officers early Monday and charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of committing a lewd act on a child under 14.
Officers said a 9-year-old girl told officials at the Lowcountry Children’s Center on January 18 that she had been sexually abused by Brannen when she was between the ages of 6 and 8. The victim told police that the suspect touched her inappropriately several times.
In court on Monday, Brannen’s lawyer said similar allegations were investigated by the Lowcountry Children’s Center in 2009 and found not to be true.
Brannen has made a minor career as a “roots rock” musician since the 1980s. He toured with Toby Keith and Shania Twain early in the careers of those future stars. He also wrote the song “Somebody” for legendary band The Eagles 2007 album Long Road Out of Eden.
