Hartsville Police say they have charged a man with murder in the death of a backup singer last week.
51-year-old singer Chandler Spencer, who is best known for singing the classic hook in Rob Base’s hip hop anthem ‘Joy and Pain,’ was found dead by family members last Monday in the hallway of his apartment, according to a statement from a Hartsville Police spokesman.
Police said they arrested 46-year-old John Rubin Mitchell Saturday and charged him with murder. Mitchell faces additional charges of grand larceny and petit larceny. The case remains under investigation.
Spencer’s mini-van was missing from his apartment on West Washington Street when his body was discovered, officers say. The vehicle has since been recovered.
Spencer went by the stage name Omar Chandler.
