A Catholic priest in the state has been accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.
The Diocese of Charleston reports that there are allegations against Father Hayden Vaverek, who has served at several parishes and schools in South Carolina. Vaverek is being accused of sexual misconduct 15-years-ago when he was a pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Greenwood.
According to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, a man who was representing the Catholic Church approached an investigator on Friday. He told investigators that a sexual incident involving a minor had occurred at Our Lady of Lourdes with Father Vaverek. Deputies say the victim now lives out of state. The Diocese also notes that no parishioners of that parish were involved in the reported allegation.
Vaverek has been placed on administrative leave and his priestly faculties withdrawn. Father Vaverek served at parishes in Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Greenwood, Greenville, Simpsonville, Anderson, McCormick, Moncks Corner, Bonneau, and Hilton Head Island.
The Diocese of Charleston says it encourages all victims and anyone with knowledge of sexual misconduct to contact their local authorities.
