A civilian contractor from the Midlands was killed in an attack on a U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan, according to military officials.
WIS-TV in Columbia was the first media outlet to identify 51-year-old Inez Baker of Cayce as a fatality from an attack by three men in Afghan Army uniforms on a military installation in the Kapisa province.
U.S. military officials say three men wearing Afghan army uniforms and driving an Afghan army vehicle forced their way onto the base on Friday and opened fire, killing Baker and another Afghan soldier. The three attackers were also killed, according to the International Security Assistance Force. NATO officials say they are investigating what happened. The Taliban has denied any involvement, saying the attackers were from Afghan security forces.
Baker served 26 years in the Army before retiring late last year and taking a job as a trainer. WIS quoted family members as saying Baker served several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan before moving to the private sector.
She is survived by two sons and her two sisters.
